The proposed Rajpura Mohali rail link is set to significantly improve railway connectivity between southern parts of Punjab and Chandigarh. Once completed, the new rail corridor will allow trains to reach Chandigarh directly without passing through the heavily congested Ambala junction, reducing travel time and easing pressure on one of North India’s busiest rail routes.

This long-awaited project is expected to benefit passengers from districts such as Bathinda, Patiala, Sangrur, Barnala and nearby regions, offering a faster and more efficient rail connection to the Union Territory.

Project Cost, Length and Current Status

The Rajpura–Mohali rail line will be approximately 18 kilometres long and has been approved with an estimated investment of ₹443 crore. The project has been classified as a special railway initiative, highlighting its importance for regional connectivity and infrastructure development.

Land acquisition for the rail corridor has already been initiated, and authorities have begun the groundwork required to ensure smooth execution. Dedicated officials have been appointed to speed up administrative procedures so that construction can begin without unnecessary delays.

Major Relief for Ambala Rail Congestion

One of the biggest advantages of the new rail link is that it will bypass Ambala junction, a critical but overcrowded railway node where long delays are common. Currently, most trains from southern Punjab heading towards Chandigarh or northern routes are forced to pass through Ambala, leading to congestion and scheduling challenges.

With the Rajpura–Mohali connection in place, trains will be able to take a shorter and more direct route, improving punctuality and overall operational efficiency for both passenger and freight services.

Benefits for Passengers and Freight Movement

The new rail corridor is expected to provide multiple benefits, including shorter travel time, better scheduling of trains, and improved comfort for passengers. For freight movement, the direct route will help industries and agricultural markets in southern Punjab transport goods more efficiently, reducing logistics costs.

Improved rail connectivity is also likely to boost regional economic activity, support industrial growth around Mohali and Rajpura, and enhance access to Chandigarh as an administrative, educational and healthcare hub.

Strengthening Punjab’s Railway Infrastructure

The Rajpura–Mohali rail link is part of a broader effort to modernise and expand railway infrastructure in Punjab. Several surveys and planning exercises have been conducted in recent years to identify new lines, route doubling and capacity upgrades across the state.

By improving last-mile connectivity and reducing bottlenecks, the project aligns with long-term goals of making rail travel faster, safer and more reliable for millions of passengers in North India.
